Dating back to 1734, the central offices for the Bank of England are located at Threadneedle Street, London. Not only is this one of the oldest banks still in existence, but it is also one of the most secure.

How Are Bank Vaults Actually Made?

To fully understand how vaults are made in 2019, we need to look back at where they began. For this, we need to go all the way back to the time of ancient Romans.

They created “warded locks” which were comprised of carefully crafted notches and grooves. This made them more difficult to lockpick . Going forwards to the time of ancient India, Russia and China we find our first sightings of a combination lock and small iron safes.

This method was used for centuries until the end of the 1849 Gold Rush. Here we found more and more people robbing banks, using a pickaxe and hammer. Back then, safes were small enough to carry out of a building without raising suspicion.

Meeting Mr Yale…

In 1861 Linus Yale Jr. (recognise the name?) invented the modern combination lock. But as robbers got more clever, the safes got safer. However, standard safes were simply not enough to protect banks from robberies. So in the 1920’s banks began to start using heavy vaults.

Early versions of vaults used steel for their doors, however these were vulnerable to torch heat. They then turned to cast iron, as this was more resistant. Modern vaults, believe it or not, are mainly comprised of specialised concrete.

 

Making Vault Walls

Walls and doors are made from concrete with steel rods for support. The benefit of using these materials is that vaults can be created to fit any space and be completely bespoke.

To create a vault you start with moulding your wall panels. The concrete used is so thick you cannot actually pour it at all, so it’s measured in “slump”. No slump means it’s ready to use.

Once the concrete has been made you only have 6-12 hours to get it in the mould before it completely dries. This means making even just one tiny mistake could cost you the whole panel within a day, which is why you need a professional.

 

Adding Structure

Once the concrete is in the mould you then need to add in your steel rods, whilst it’s still “wet”. This is then vibrated for a few hours to eliminate any pockets of air in the mixture. The edges are then smoothed and the entire panel is left to dry.

 

Creating A Door

Once dry and out of the mould you then move onto the door. You can use several methods to create your door: the two most common are concrete first with steel cladding after or a steel mould is created and filled directly with concrete.

 

Locking It In Place

Now you have a door, you can begin making it safe with a lock. Most vaults use a dual-control combination lock. To actually open this lock you need 2 people, for additional security. This type of lock has been used since the late 19th century and is still used today.

The Hatton Garden Heist Finally Sees Justice

During Easter of 2015, a group of elderly men raided the Hatton Garden security deposit boxes. The ages of the men ranged from 59 to 75 years of age.

In 2016, almost 1 year later, 6 of the 7 suspects were sentenced and imprisoned. The last suspect, known only as “Basil”, was left still on the run.

Consequently, in 2019, almost 4 years after the famous robbery took place, the ring leader known as “Basil” has been sentenced.

More About ‘Basil’…

The man known as “Basil” is actually not even called Basil. His name is Michael Seed and he is a 58 year old alarm specialist.

Furthermore, it’s thought that Seed actually let himself into the building with a set of keys to disarm the security system. He and one other gang member were the only men to physically enter the building and raid 73 safety deposit boxes.

Unsurprisingly, his day in Woolwich Crown Court in front of Judge Christopher Kinch QC was a frosty one…

“Your role was a central one. You were at the heart of the core activities that had to be carried out. You were not just there to fetch and carry.”

 

What Was The Outcome?

The jury found Seed guilty of conspiracy to burgle and conspiracy to convert or transfer criminal property. This was after over 35 hours of deliberation from the jury.

As a result he will serve 10 years for one and 8 years for the other, to be served concurrently. Seed appeared ‘expressionless’ after learning of the verdict.

 

How Was He Found Out?

In the 3 weeks after the heist, Seed was seen meeting with cohort John Collins via surveillance. He was then found to have travelled to Portugal 3 times, where it is suspected he spent some of the stolen money.

In March 2018 his home was raided and he was found to be melting gold and dismantling jewellery.

Additionally, they also found electronic equipment, including an alarm panel and a mobile jammer, thought to have been used in the heist.

How Is Bank Vault Removal Carried Out?

High Street Branch Closures

Due to the ongoing change in the banking sector and the continuing closures of high street bank branches we are seeing an increased amount of ex bank premises being redeveloped by landlords. In many cases a major part of this redevelopment is changing the use of the premises back into a high street retail unit and therefore the presence of very large and very heavy bank vaults inside the premises is a huge problem! Trident Safes are contacted regularly by either landlords or construction companies to assist with bank vault removal.

Types Of Vault

Bank vaults will be one of two different types of construction. Either a pored concrete room with reinforced walls and a large vault door and frame fixed into the entrance of the room, or a prefabricated room made up of large panels filled with steel and hardened concrete welded or bolted together. Both of these designs offer the same level of security however we would use completely different methods to remove them. Many people believe that there is a scrap value of these vault rooms however they are made up of mostly concrete so scrap dealers are not interested in taking them. The prefabricated vault room is completely removable by Trident Safes with minimal mess or disruption to site with all panels, door and frame easily broken down (if you know how) into separate pieces and removed from the building. The pored concrete vault will be much harder to remove. Trident Safes will remove the vault door and frame, the frame will have to be broken out of the wall using concrete breakers and in some cases cut in half, this is not a nice job! The concrete room would be a demolition project, Trident Safes work closely with demolition companies and we can put you in touch with the right company who have experience in removing the reinforced concrete walls of vault rooms.

The expertise, equipment and hard work involved in removing these ex bank vaults is something that should certainly be left to professionals. Trying to remove a bank vault without the correct training or experience would be very dangerous, In most cases the door alone would weigh in excess of 1.5 tonnes and each panel (of a prefabricated vault) would weigh approx 900kgs. As you can imagine any mistakes made when handling objects of this weight and size could very easily result in a serious accident. Once removed from site these parts need to be loaded onto a HGV lorry for transportation.
